Handgun Training Tips

posted on: January 10th, 2008

When you go to the range try this:
- Shoot one magazine at a pastor or quarter sized target. Focus on all the fundamentals and try to get every bullet to touch the pastor (not your preacher).
- Shoot at a paper plate or 8 ½” x 11” piece of paper from different ranges and try to achieve every round on the paper plate at the fastest speed possible for that range (it will be very fast at 1 yard and slower at 15 yards). Mastering this skill of balancing speed & accuracy is critical to your survival.
- Also practice the following skills: drawing from the holster, drawing from concealment, strong- and weak-hand shooting, close quarters combat shooting / instinctive shooting, point shooting, shooting from cover, shooting from various positions (squatting, kneeling, sitting, prone, on your back), shooting on the move, multiples target engagement (at different ranges and heights), etc.

Caution: Some of these techniques are advanced shooting skills. Consider receiving instruction to ensure proper technique & safety. Defensive Handgun Training LLC is hoping to offer the Handgun Tactics Course in the spring or early summer.

Quick Concealed Carry Tips

posted on: January 8th, 2008

Here are some quick concealed carry tips for you. Just remember, if you don’t have to use your weapon, that is always the best option.

  • If possible, avoid any conflict.
  • Do not be part of the process of allowing a conflict to escalate. In other words, don’t respond to obscene gestures and do not respond to vulgar language.
  • If attacked, MOVE, preferably to COVER (true cover will stop a bullet. If not available, use whatever cover is available).
  • Always assume you are being videotaped because you likely are. As a law-abiding citizen, you should always choose to make moral and ethical decisions.
  • Be careful not to touch or adjust your concealed handgun while in public, especially when you are new to carrying. This could cause panic or problems with security or the police.
  • If carrying a concealed handgun on your waist, never bend over to pick something up since you will likely expose your firearm or imprint it on your concealment garment. Instead, bend you knees and pick it up.

Avoid Conflict with Situational Awareness

posted on: December 24th, 2007

If you are not in the habit of carrying a concealed handgun daily, I recommend that you consider doing so wherever it is legal. Recent shootings in the US highlight the fact that shootings can occur at any place, at any time.

During the last year, shootings have occurred in schools, shopping malls (Salt Lake City’s Trolley Square & Omaha, NE), churches, the workplace, etc. If you have a means to protect yourself and your family, you are less likely to panic during such an event because now you have options. You should have the mindset that you “refuse to be a victim.”

Your “mindset” is your biggest variable in your survival. Condition yourself to prevail regardless of the circumstances (multiple assailants, you are injured, etc.). The biggest problem is letting panic rule your judgement.

SAFETY CORNER

4 CARDINAL GUN SAFETY RULES
It is critical that you always follow these safety rules. Bad habits are hard to break, but these rules could save a life. Each of these rules start with an “always” for a reason.

  • Always treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
    • Note: Every time you pick up a firearm, check to see if it is loaded. Don’t trust anyone else that has checked it, check it yourself. Afterwards, still treat it as if is were loaded.
  • Always point your firearm in a safe direction (unless defending yourself or others).
    • Bottom Line: If your firearm discharges, you should not harm anyone and do minimal damage to property. If you are being attacked, then aiming your firearm at the assailant is the safest direction at that moment.
  • Always keep your finger outside of the trigger guard until on target and ready to shoot.
    • Better yet, put your trigger finger up on the frame when not shooting. Why? Because startle response or sympathetic response can cause you to unintentionally discharge your firearm.
  • Always be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
    • It doesn’t matter if you are at the range or defending yourself. Who or what will your bullet hit after passing through or missing your target?

Children & Firearms
Never assume any of the following:

  • - That a child will not be able to find your firearm
  • - Than young children will be able to tell the difference between a real and toy gun
  • - That your child will not be able to pull the trigger or operate the slide

Storage of firearms in your home
You can be held responsible for not safely storing your firearms at home.

HANDGUN TACTICS COURSE
In May, I taught this course at Miami Rifle & Pistol (MR&P) Club. It was an absolute success in every respect. It started at 8:00 am and finished around 8:00 pm.

Contents:

Safety Briefing / Review of the Fundamentals / Drawing from a holster / Drawing from Concealment / Shooting While Moving / Multiple Target Engagement / Emergency & Tactical Reloading / Malfunction Clearing Drills / Instinctive Shooting / Point Shooting / Strong-and Weak-Hand Shooting / Shooting from Cover / Use of Deadly Force / and much more.

It was a fast-paced course with students shooting approximately 400 + rounds.

Interested?
To offer this course outside of MR&P, I need to locate a suitable location to conduct the course. A significant discount will be given to the person who assists me in finding a range / property for this course. Contact Joe @ jkalil1@insightbb.com for range requirements.

UPCOMING ELECTIONS

Be cautious about any candidate for office that states, “I support the Second Amendment.” To ensure that a candidate supports your right to own firearms and to carry concealed, you want them to say, “I support the individual’s right to keep and bear arms.”

Our right to keep and bear arms is not only a Constitutional right, but a God-given right.

You need to communicate your support of the 2nd Amendment (in its original intent) to your elected representatives at both the state and national level. Also, don’t forget to vote!

GUN RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS
I am often asked what organizations people should join to help defend their right to keep and bear arms. The following is what I suggest:

National:

Kentucky:

Ohio:

You can find more links at our site links page: defensivehandguntraining.com/links/

Better yet, volunteer to join the board of directors of one of these organizations. Get involved!
